We were delighted to welcome back Manchester Met alumnus and former MP Huw Edwards (MBE) who delivered a compelling workshop on how researchers can influence parliament. The session focused on the crucial role of academic research in shaping public policy and legislation, offering insights on how researchers can effectively engage with Parliament and policymakers.

Huw underscored how research impacting on policymaking can be hugely significant and transformative, stating, “Impact is the good that researchers can have in the world.” He highlighted the significance of the Research Excellence Framework, and how influencing parliament can count towards developing strong impact case studies to support their submissions.

We were pleased to also welcome special guest Dr Jasmine Hearn, who successfully influenced parliamentary debate through policy engagement training, securing media coverage and discussions on endometriosis care. She explained her story to attendees and shared key insights with fellow researchers. The training session went on to explore the mechanisms of parliamentary scrutiny, including Select Committees, Parliamentary Questions (PQs), and cross-party groups, providing researchers with practical strategies for influencing government decisions.

Attendees were guided on engaging with MPs, drafting PQs, and contributing to government consultations. Edwards emphasised the value of direct communication with policymakers, urging academics to tailor their research for non-specialist audiences and leverage strategic opportunities within Parliament.

The event concluded with a call to action, encouraging researchers to take proactive steps in ensuring their work has a tangible impact on society.
